Elijahs Cup or 100 Questions and Answers about Prostate Disease

Elijah's Cup: A Family's Journey into the Community and Culture of High-Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome

Author: Valerie Paradiz

Faced with her two-year-old toddler's precipitous bout with epilepsy and his puzzling behaviors, Valerie Paradiz took a bold and unusual path, coming to terms with and ultimately embracing the strange beauty of her son Elijah's special neurological disorder, which was diagnosed as Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.

In Elijah's Cup, Paradiz tells the powerful story of her family's struggle with her son's disease, one characterized by social awkwardness, literal-mindedness, and a fixation with particular subjects and interests. Like attention deficit disorder (ADD), dyslexia, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Asperger's has exploded in diagnosis in the last decade, reconfiguring the known incidence of autism in the population with estimates as high as one in fifty people.

Ever since autism was "discovered" by researchers in the 1940s, the disability has been under the strict purview of professionals in medicine, psychiatry, and education. Like the deaf community, autistics themselves have had little voice in expressing their real experience and needs. They were framed as too "sick" to be conscious of their own internal lives, too "mentally ill" to possess an identity. All this has changed.

Today there is a blossoming movement of autistic self-advocacy groups and alliances that pose challenging questions to the medical status quo. A fascinating, independent expression of another way of life, full of quirkiness, hardship, and humor, has emerged. Elijah's Cup is a provocative and pioneering book that pushes the envelope of what we know about autism. Were Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, and the comedian Andy Kaufman, whom we usually think of as brillianteccentrics, autistic? Can these figures serve as role models to this community?

Elijah's Cup offers a refreshing take on mental disability from the perspective of civil rights, history, and the arts. From encounters with the founders of the first civil rights organizations for autistics, who guide Paradiz and her son toward a sense of community and self-respect, and with visual artists, who share with Elijah their special ability to "think in pictures," Elijah reaches extraordinary heights in his sociability and emotional well-being.

In this utterly absorbing and inspiring narrative, Paradiz also reveals her own shadow syndrome, which afflicts many family members of autistics. She is a "cousin," a genetic link to her son's autism. Standing as she does on this cultural borderline, Paradiz is a sensitive translator between two worlds, revealing a groundbreaking insider's view of the beauty of minds hidden in the shadows of autism.

Publishers Weekly

This expressive and deeply felt memoir explores how the diagnosis of the author's son, Elijah, with Asperger's syndrome (a high-functioning autism) changed her life. As a young child, Elijah had delays in language and motor skills, and also suffered seizures. Paradiz, an assistant professor of German studies at Bard College, details the subsequent dissolution of her marriage (although she and her ex-husband are now friends) and her own depression, events triggered by the problems of coping with Elijah's needs. After Paradiz hired a babysitter with Asperger's syndrome and read several accounts written by people diagnosed as autistic, she understood that her son was a visual rather than a verbal thinker. (According to the author, Albert Einstein and Andy Warhol both had Asperger's syndrome.) This realization led her to provide Elijah with the repetitive activities he needed to enjoy his life. She describes their time together at Autreat, a camp for autistics that emphasizes self-advocacy, an idea that has been rejected by more traditional parents and teachers, who believe that autistics cannot know their needs. This is a moving personal story that highlights a new way of thinking about people diagnosed as autistic. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

This insightful memoir by the mother of a boy with a high-functioning form of autism includes a history of the disorder, a look at present-day activists, and psychological profiles of well-known people the author believes were autistic. Paradiz (German Studies/Bard Coll.) views autism not as a mental illness but as a way of life with its own deep culture. While eloquently chronicling day-to-day experiences from her son Elijah's birth to age 12, she also records her struggle to understand the nature of autism and the unique way in which autistic people experience the world. By chance, she hires as caretaker for her son a woman with Asperger's Syndrome who recognizes that Elijah has the same condition and helps Paradiz cope with it. Her research leads her to the revelatory writings of two articulate, high-functioning autistic women, Donna Williams and Temple Grandin. When Paradiz learns that autism has a genetic component, she scrutinizes her family tree and concludes that her grandmother, her father, and she herself possess shadow traits that constitute what geneticists call "broader autism phenotype": intense preoccupations, a preference for solitary activities, a need for sameness in certain aspects of life. Searching for historical role models for her son, who develops a consuming interest in television, especially comedy and animated cartoons, she finds autistic traits in Einstein, whose language development was delayed and whose visual thinking was extraordinary, and in Andy Warhol, another visual thinker whose social interactions were often bizarre; similarly, while perusing a biography of Andy Kaufman, she sees signs of autism in the comedian's childhood obsession with televisionperformances. Not everyone will accept Paradiz's view that these individuals' talents and idiosyncrasies can be explained by autism, but her descriptions of her son's world and of the autism activists she comes to know are perceptive and enlightening. A valuable addition to the growing literature on this neurological condition.

Staying Connected While Letting Go or Power Tennis Training

Staying Connected While Letting Go: The Paradox of Alzheimer's Caregiving

Author: Sandy Braff

This book, laced with poignant stories, focuses on the emotional impact of this disease on the caregivers and offers specific coping strategies they can use to keep them emotionally sane in this chaotic time.

Publishers Weekly

In their unflagging dedication to caregiving, spouses of an Alzheimer's patient often neglect their own emotional needs, say the authors of this compassionate volume. Braff, a therapist, and Olenik, formerly a research associate in an N.I.H.-funded study of Alzheimer's caregivers, chart the course of the disease from the caregivers' perspective, gathering stories of how they coped with the diagnosis, the painful progression and finally, their spouse's death. It is these stories that form the backbone of this book. Just as members of a support group share tales of grappling with fear, stress and isolation, so do the voices in this volume: Carolyn mourns the loss of meaningful conversation with her husband; Al misses the physical intimacy; Mamie comes to terms with the fact that her husband no longer recognizes her. The authors eschew direct advice in favor of vignettes that model, they hope, healthy ways of coping. This may frustrate some looking for concrete actions to take, phone numbers to call or other resources to peruse; the overwritten commentary, too, might grate (e.g. the authors want to "clip the wings of and enfeeble the predatory emotional effects" of the disease). But Braff and Olenik care deeply about their subject, and their book will help people struggling with a failing spouse feel part of a large and strong community. Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

A licensed marriage family therapist, Braff facilitated a weekly Alzheimer's support group for 14 years. Coauthor Olenik interviewed over 300 spousal caregivers over a six-year period in her research capacity at the University of California's Alzheimer's Caregiver Research Study. Their book explores the emotions that spousal caregivers of Alzheimer's patients experience as the disease progresses. In narratives arranged by the different stages of the disease, the participants manifest surprising resilience, problem solving, and coping behaviors. In addition, they are remarkably frank about discussing loss of sexual intimacy and dating before a spouse's death. This title, which effectively demonstrates that "the result of caregiving and grieving is often an initiation into a deeper, more meaningful life experience," is well suited to the comprehensive consumer health collections of large public, medical, and hospital libraries. Libraries in remote areas without local Alzheimer's support groups also will want to buy it for the benefit of isolated caregivers. Nancy Mace and Peter Rabins's The 36-Hour Day would be a better choice for small libraries looking for a single resource as it offers practical hints and guidelines for caregivers who are not necessarily spouses. Chris Adamec does a great job of describing the dilemmas faced by women with ADD as they try to keep up with the juggling act of raising children and managing a household, often while holding down a full-time job...At times she is sympathetic and humorous, at other times, very serious as she reviews a wide range of concerns.

After opening chapters that focus more on women's ADD issues, Chris turns to parenting---from pregnancy and new motherhood, to the elementary school years, to high school. At each step of the way she offers quotes from mothers with ADD as well as from female professionals in the field, almost giving the reader the feeling that she is sitting in a support group for moms with ADD.

Brain Development: Normal Processes and the Effects of Alcohol and Nicotine

Author: Michael W Miller

This is the first book about both normal development of the nervous system and how early exposure to alcohol and nicotine interferes with this development. The developing nervous system is highly dynamic and vulnerable to genetic and epigenetic factors that can be additive or synergistic. Disruption of normal brain development leads to an array of developmental disorders. One of the most common of these is mental retardation, the prime cause of which is prenatal exposure to alcohol. As chapters in this book show, alcohol has direct effects on the developing neural system and it affects genetic regulation. Another common neurotoxin is nicotine, and it is discussed in this book for three reasons: (1) the number of adolescents who smoke cigarettes is rising in some populations; (2) prenatal exposure to nicotine affects neurotransmitter systems that are critical for normal brain development and cognition; and (3) prenatal exposure to nicotine is often accompanied by prenatal exposure to alcohol.LThe mature brain is the culmination of an orderly sequence of the basic ontogenetic processes--cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and death. Neural stem cells and progenitors proliferate in discrete sites; then, young neurons migrate long distances to their residences where they form neural networks. During this sequence many immature cells die, presumably eliminating unsuitable or non-competitive cells. Each process is regulated by genetic and environmental factors. When this regulation goes awry, a dysmorphic and dysfunctional brain results. Though this can be tragic in clinical settings, in experimental contexts it provides keen insight into normal braindevelopment.LThe book is divided into three parts. The first describes neural ontogeny in the normal brain. The second and third deal with the consequences of early exposure to alcohol and nicotine. Though there are similarities in the effects of these two toxins, there are also intriguing differences. The commonalities reflect the plasticity and resilience of the developing brain while the differences point to the targeted effects of the two toxins. Exploring these effects brings a richer appreciation of brain development. The book will be of interest to neuroscientists, developmental biologists, teratologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, neurologists, neuropsychologists, and to their students and trainees.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Scott D Phillips, MD(University of Colorado School of Medicine)
Description:This book first reviews the normal process of brain development, then details the pathophysiology and neurotoxicity of ethanol on brain development, and concludes with a detailed look at the effects of nicotine on brain development.
Purpose:The purpose was to contrast normal brain development, and the effects of alcohol and nicotine on the growing brain. With the marked prevalence of ethanol and nicotine abuse in our society, this is a welcome review of the topic. The book accomplishes these goals and provides an excellent review of the topics that will be useful to many physicians and scientists.
Audience:This in-depth book is most suitable for practitioners or researchers in the field of alcohol and nicotine developmental effects. The chapter authors have extensive research experience.
Features:The introductory section on normal development is important to help readers get up to speed on the topic. The authors then take readers through epidemiological considerations of alcohol and nicotine use and include a discussion on socioeconomic status and the interplay in development. At the end of each chapter there is a useful listing of abbreviations. This is a very detailed and in-depth look at the topic and may be too technical for some readers. However, for the targeted audience, it is an excellent review.
Assessment:This excellent book will be very useful to many readers including pediatricians, toxicologists, substance abuse specialists, researchers, and many others.

The Book of Skin or The Right to Die

The Book of Skin

Author: Steven Connor

Skin, Steven Connor argues, has never been more visible. The Book of Skin explores the multiple functions of the skin in the cultures of the West. In this vividly illustrated book, Connor draws on evidence from a variety of sources, including literary and other forms of public and private writing (especially medical texts), as well as film, folklore, painting, photography, and popular song. Because of its newfound visibility, skin has never been at once so manifest and so in jeopardy as it is today. This dilemma becomes evident, in Connor's view, if we examine how skin is displayed and manipulated as a site of inscription. In order to trace our culture's anxious concerns with the materiality and mortality of skin, Connor's analysis ranges from the human body itself to photography, from Medieval leprosy, Renaissance flaying, and eternal syphilis to cosmetics, plastic surgery, and skin cancers.

Connor examines the chromatics of skin color and pigmentation, blushing, suntanning, paleness, darkening, tattooing, cutting, the Turin shroud, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man. He also offers engaging explanations for why particular colors are ascribed to feelings and conditions such as green for envy, purple for rage, and yellow for cowardice. Connor's insights into the obvious and yet unfamiliar terrain of the skin and its place in Western culture ameliorates the intensities and attenuations of touch in cultural history. The Book of Skin bears out James Joyce's claim that "modern man has an epidermis rather than a soul."

Men Are Stupid and They Like Big Boobs or Understanding Skin Problems

Men Are Stupid . . . And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman's Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery

Author: Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers is uniquely qualified to talk about plastic surgery — because she's one of the few celebrities unafraid to admit to the world what she's "had done" to keep looking so great. Now, with no-holds-barred, she gives women straight-talking advice on better living through looking better.

Joan Rivers's abiding life philosophy is simple: in the appearance-centric society of the twenty-first century, beauty is key — especially where men are concerned. Men like pretty women. And so, getting something lifted, tightened, adjusted, or removed is as fundamental as wearing makeup or using hair conditioner. Now, for any woman considering her options, Joan Rivers takes the mystery out of cosmetic surgery. Informed by the country's top plastic surgeons, she takes listeners step-by-step through the entire process, from finding the right doctor to the bruising truth about recovery and the facts about cosmetic surgery's very real risks.

But don't worry — there's dish, too. Men Are Stupid...And They Like Big Boobs is rife with Hollywood gossip about who's done what and how often...and is filled with Rivers's personal anecdotes about life under the knife. Part comic musing, part bitch-fest, and part hands-on advice, this is a funny, wildly frank, and genuinely passionate argument for a woman's right to do whatever it takes to be beautiful, to feel better about herself, and be happy. Take it from the woman who enjoys having it all — done.

Running on Ritalin or Integrating Traditional Healing Practices into Counseling and Psychotherapy

Running on Ritalin: A Physician Reflects on Children, Society, and Performance in a Pill

Author: Lawrence H Diller

In a book as provocative and newsworthy as Listening to Prozac and Driven to Distraction, a physician speaks out on America's epidemic level of diagnoses for attention deficit disorder, and on the drug that has become almost a symbol of our times: Ritalin.

In 1997 alone, nearly five million people in the United States were prescribed Ritalin--most of them young children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Use of this drug, which is a stimulant related to amphetamine, has increased by 700 percent since 1990. And this phenomenon appears to be uniquely American: 90 percent of the world's Ritalin is used here. Is this a cause for alarm--or simply the case of an effective treatment meeting a newly discovered need? Important medical advance--or drug of abuse, as some critics claim?

Lawrence Diller has written the definitive book about this crucial debate--evenhanded, wide-ranging, and intimate in its knowledge of families, schools, and the pressures of our speeded-up society. As a pediatrician and family therapist, he has evaluated hundreds of children, adolescents, and adults for ADD, and he offers crucial information and treatment options for anyone struggling with this problem.

Running on Ritalin also throws a spotlight on some of our most fundamental values and goals. What does Ritalin say about the old conundrums of nature vs. nurture, free will vs. responsibility? Is ADD a disability that entitles us to special treatment? If our best is not good enough, can we find motivation and success in a pill? Is there still a place for childhood in the performance-driven America of the late nineties?

Time Magazine

In the past 18 months a flurry of ADD and ADHD books have hit the shelves...Lawrence Diller's Running on Ritalin is the book most people are talking about.

Los Angeles Times

Anyone with doubts [about Ritalin] should read this thoughtful book by child psychiatrist Dr. Lawrence H. Diller.

Integrating Traditional Healing Practices into Counseling and Psychotherapy

Author: Roy Moodley

Marsella, Ph.D., D.H.C., University of Hawaii, Honolulu, for PsycCritiques (Contemporary Psychology), APA, November 15, 2005 issue

Integrating Traditional Healing Practices Into Counseling and Psychotherapy
critically examines ethnic minority cultural and traditional healing in relation to counseling and psychotherapy. Authors Roy Moodley and William West highlight the challenges and changes in the field of multicultural counseling and psychotherapy by integrating current issues of traditional healing with contemporary practice. The book uniquely presents a range of accounts of the dilemmas and issues facing students, professional counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, researchers, and others who use multicultural counseling or transcultural psychotherapy as part of their professional practice.

Key Features:
  • Contributes to the wider debates about ethnic minority health care by focusing on how ethnic minority groups construct illness perceptions and the kinds of treatments they expect to solve health and mental health problems
  • Analyzes traditional healing of racial, ethnic, and religious groups living in the United States, Canada, and Britain to consider the diffusion of healing practices across cultural boundaries
  •  Explores contemporary alternative healthcare movements such as paganism, New Age Spirituality and healing, transcendental meditation, and new religious movements to increase the knowledge and capacity of clinical expertise of students studying in this field

Integrating Traditional Healing Practices Into Counseling and Psychotherapy is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate students studying multicultural counseling or psychotherapy. The book is also a valuable resource for academics, researchers, psychotherapists, counselors, and other practitioners.

Trauma-Centered Group Psychotherapy for Women: A Clinician's Manual

Author: Hadar Lubin

The awareness of psychological trauma has grown exponentially in the past decade and clinicians in many areas have increasingly found themselves confronted with the need to provide trauma-related services to clients. Still, there remains a serious lack of manuals that guide clinicians using group therapy to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma-Centered Group Psychotherapy for Women: A Clinician's Manual is the important, "how-to" resource that fills this void with a successful theory-based, field-tested model of group therapy for traumatized women. Concise and full of clinical examples, this helpful text includes a session-by-session guide for clinicians and a workbook for clients.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Nicholas Greco IV, MS, BCETS, CATSM(College of Lake County)
Description:This wonderful book explains the tools and skills necessary to perform successful trauma-centered group psychotherapy with women. Despite the recent advances in treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the female group psychotherapy experience is an area in much need of further exploration, and this book provides the map.
Purpose:The focus is on providing clinicians with the authors' own 16-week method for conducting weekly outpatient group psychotherapy with women suffering from trauma. The authors present the theory, excellent case discussion, and appropriate evidence of success.
Audience:Clearly, mental health professionals working with trauma-exposed women will benefit the most, as this is not only a great teaching tool but also a clinical guide for immediate implementation into practice. Both authors clearly demonstrate their wealth of knowledge and experience.
Features:The highlight is the structure of the manual that walks readers through the 16 weeks of this therapeutic model. I particularly appreciated the discussion of therapists being guided by the three basic principles of immediacy, engagement, and emotionality. These three principles have applicability across the field of mental health and are just one great example of how beneficial this guide is both clinically and academically. The case examples are realistic; any therapeutic manual worth its weight has to have clear, concise, and meaningful vignettes. The authors know their material and bring the book and their therapeutic model to life with these cases. Astandout chapter is how to manage traumatic reenactments, as any clinician knows that discussing trauma is never easy for a patient. The book is more than mere explanation; it is a guide to helping the therapist bring together a group of women who may not normally have met if not for their shared conditions.
Assessment:If one word could sum this book up it would have to be outstanding! Clinicians need solid, usable models for treating PTSD, especially in women, and we now have one.

Identifying and Treating Blockages to Healing or Help My Child Is Struggling in School

Identifying and Treating Blockages to Healing

Author: Beate Strittmatter

With chronic illnesses on the rise, many of which are resistant to therapy, attention is increasingly focused on new ways of understanding disease processes. Regions of minimal chronic stress are often neglected as potential causes of disease due to their lack of symptoms, when in fact they may be the actual blockage to the healing process. These blockages are known as focal disturbances. In many cases, where such foci were found and treated with ear acupuncture or neural therapy, chronic ailments that previously resisted conventional treatments subsided.

This book addresses the basic concepts and information about this revolutionary approach to healing:
• the definition of focal disturbances
• how to diagnose, locate, and treat foci
• the role of ear acupuncture in treating focal disturbances

Profit from the author's years of international teaching experience and learn the basics and application of this important diagnostic tool to expand your treatment and remove blockages to healing.

Listening to Patients: Relearning the Art of Healing in Psychotherapy

Author: Richard G Druss

In this gem of a book, master teacher and psychiatrist Richard G. Druss stresses a flexible and humane approach to psychotherapy. Using clinical anecdotes as a method of teaching, Druss presents some of his own early cases--failures as well as successes-and through these moving vignettes gives us fresh insights into both the therapeutic process and the healing relationship between therapist and patient. As he has to generations of supervisees, Druss describes the value and beauty of learning how to listen to patients. The chapters in this volume follow a logical and chronological sequence--from the initial establishment of rapport with a new patient to the realization of goals at the end of therapy. Along the way, Druss examines such topics as "Conflict, Personality, and Culture in Psychotherapy," "The Spiritual Life of Patients," and Patients Who Return to Psychotherapy After Termination." This book is written for psychiatry residents, medical students, and practitioners of clinical psychology, social work, nursing, and primary care medicine. This beautifully written volume, totally free of jargon and arcane terminology, would be of equal interest to any educated person who wishes to know more about modern dynamic psychotherapy.

"Dr. Richard Druss is one of psychiatry's most humane and eloquent teachers on the value and healing power of the psychotherapies. This accessible and inspiring book describes crucial aspects of the therapy process and the lives of people who are transformed by it. Its wisdom and insights deserve to be savored by a wide audience of those in the helping professions, students, and interested laypersons." - Kathryn Zerbe, MD, Jack Aron Professor ofPsychiatric Education and Women's Mental Health, the Menninger Clinic
"The thesis of Richard Druss' book is simple: that therapeutic effectiveness is directly dependent on the working alliance between the patient and clinician and that the alliance can only be accomplished by listening to patients. A simple assertion, but one increasingly overlooked in this era of one-hour evaluations, DSM-IV "formulations" and fifteen minute "med checks." Dr. Druss' method of teaching is by clinical anecdote and in doing so he documents his thesis. But he teaches more than listening skills and how they aid psychodynamic understanding. In his case histories he presents a role model for the good clinician: warm, empathic, flexible and thoughtful. He states that the book is directed at psychiatric residents, medical students, and trainees in clinical psychology, social work and nursing, but I think this book will be read with pleasure, and quite possibly profit, by the experienced clinician as well." - Paul H. Wender, MD, University of Utah School of Medicine
"The author epitomizes what a true teacher is. His credibility and knowledge are unquestionable, and his warm compassion for patients shines ever so brightly through his writing. The author guides readers in a logical and chronological sequence from the establishment of rapport to more complicated issues of psychotherapy such as conflict and transference. In an era where clinicians are pressured to be both efficient and provide quality care, the importance of listening may sometimes be neglected. This book is a back-to-basics approach in an easy-to-follow format, and the author reminds clinicians to listen and promote empathy, flexibility, and imagination in therapy. A book such as this is rare; it is one which I found personally difficult to put down, and one which I had to read from cover to cover. I was moved and inspired by the author and would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any clinician."--Doody's

The Coachs Strength Training Playbook or Conscious Seeing

The Coach's Strength Training Playbook

Author: Joe Kenn

Strength and conditioning specialist Joe Kenn draws upon the three strength disciplines; weightlifting, powerlifiting, and body building, as well as training principles of traditional periodization and high-intensity training, to define the Tier System of athletic-based strength training. The tier system promotes training athletes on a rotation of movements (total body, upper body, lower body) rather than training body parts. The result is an integrated, whole-body strength training program with greater real-world and sport-appropriate applicability. The book explores an overview of the system, and provides annual plan development, training cycles, and daily and weekly plans. Ideal for coaches and trainers of football, basketball, track & field, wrestling, gymnastics and any sport requiring maximum and explosive strength.
